JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible for the safe operation of all equipment including assigned tractor, various trailers, and as required, the loading and unloading of various cargo on such equipment. The Driver will conduct pre-trip and in-route safety inspections as required by the DOT, and by company policy. The Driver is responsible for the accurate and timely completion of all federally and company mandated paperwork including but not limited to: logbook, trip sheets, damage reports, weekly tally/trip reports, and other reports or forms as required by special handling such as in bond shipments and pier pick up and delivery forms. The driver will complete and submit all required paperwork including a signed delivery receipt before payment can be made for work completed.
The Driver will operate company equipment in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations as applicable. When traveling with over-dimensional loads, the Driver is responsible for operation within the limits of the permits issued for the trip and are responsible for notifying the company of any changes or reissues required to satisfy this responsibility. This specifically includes responsibility for measuring the length, width, and loaded height of all loads. All loads must be weighed and must fall within the parameters established by the trip permit or by individually set state limits with regard to gross or axle weights.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Must be willing to be away from home for a minimum of twenty one (21) days.
Must possess a current Class "A" Commercial Drivers License. No endorsements are required.
Minimum of 23 years of age.
Must have or be able to acquire a TWIC Card
Must have or be able to acquire a Passport
Minimum of two (2) years verifiable Over- The-Road (OTR) driving experience, of which at least six months must be flatbed experience.
Safe driving record as determined by the Safety Director and Insurance Carrier’s criteria.
Must be able to pass DOT physical and PAT (Physical Abilities Test).
Able to pass drug/alcohol test and meet DOT requirements.
Able to meet the responsibilities and physical requirements as listed below.
JOB DUTIES:
The employee drives a company-owned conventional tractor equipped with a sleeper berth.
The employee pulls a company-owned trailer for the purpose of hauling construction equipment or other size and weight cargo. Trailers will have fixed necks or may be equipped with hydraulically-operated and removable goose-necks which are operated by the Driver.
The employee is often required to drive construction equipment for loading and unloading purposes. The employee may find it necessary to reposition equipment on the trailer in order to satisfy weight requirements specified on state-issued travel permits.
All loads must be securely chained to the trailer with company-issued or approved chains. Ratchet binders will be used to secure the chains to the trailers and loads.
Some items require the use of nylon straps for securement.
Chain protectors should be used whenever practical to protect the condition of the load.
Exhaust stacks on cargo must be taped prior to transit.
Hardwood blocking may be required on some loads. This blocking may be positioned to prevent movement as in the case of chalk blocks or to support the weight of the load. Blocking must be checked on all inspections made. Blocking should be used to prevent all metal-to-metal contact between trailer and load surfaces.
Employee must make pre-trip and in-transit safety inspections to check for loose chains and blocking.
All loose blocking or unused loading material must be secured to the trailer during transit.
Approved over-dimensional signs and flags must be affixed to all permit loads.
If required, flashing lights must be mounted and operated.
Driver is responsible for reading permit and displaying or affixing safety equipment to the load or trailer as required in provisions.
The Driver is responsible for all company-issued equipment and its condition. Purchase Order Numbers must be obtained for the issue of chains, binders, and other necessary operational equipment or items. Drivers are responsible for all items issued to them or the tractor assigned to them and will be held accountable upon transfer to a different unit or upon separation from the company. A deduction may be made from final wages to cover items not returned.
Employee is responsible for the timely completion of required paperwork as outlined in the responsibilities section above.
Employee will advise operations when loaded and empty, and of any change in expected transit, delivery or pick up times. This can be done by telephone or by use of satellite communication equipment if tractor is so equipped.
